Mary was born in 1883 in Copthorne, Sussex, England. Mary's father was Josiah Daniels and her mother is Elizabeth Payne. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Daniels and Ellen Kenward. She had six brothers and two sisters, named George, Josiah, James, Thomas, Albert, William, Ellen and Rose. She is the fourth oldest of the nine children.
