Thomas was born in 1856 in Horne, Surrey, England. Thomas' father was Thomas Daniels and his mother was Ellen Kenward. His maternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Josiah, John, Richard, Albert, Agnes, Rose, Fanny, Susan and Charlotte. He is the third oldest of the ten children.
