Hilda was born in 1907 in Carlshalton, Surrey, England. Hilda's father was Charles Longley and her mother was Elizabeth Hines. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Longley and Mary Patmore. She had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Lillian. She is the second oldest of the three children.
