Hugh was born in 1894.  Hugh's father is Dougald (Dugald) Rankine and his mother is Catherine Marquis.  His paternal grandparents are Donald Rankin and Maggie (Margaret?) McInnis; his maternal grandparents are Nicol Marquis and Isabella Turner. He has five brothers and a sister, named Donald, Nichol, James, Alexander, Dougal (Dugald) and Bella.  He is the third youngest of the seven children.
