Emily was born in 1864 in Lingfield, Surrey, England. Emily's father was James Kenward and her mother was Miriam Laker. Her paternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Edgar, Arthur, James, Annie, Bertha, Hannah, Fanny, Miriam, Ellen and Daisy. She is the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
