Miriam was born in 1876 in Lingfield, Surrey, England. Miriam's father was James Kenward and her mother was Miriam Laker. Her paternal grandparents were Josiah Kenward and Ann Bashford. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Edgar, Arthur, James, Annie, Bertha, Emily, Hannah, Fanny, Ellen and Daisy. She is the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
