Ada was born in 1873 in Cowden, Kent, England. Ada's father was Henry Longley and her mother was Eliza Mepham. Her paternal grandparents were John Longley and Esther Kenward. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Walter, Frederick, Albert, Lewis, Henrietta, Elizabeth, Selina, Bertha, Mabel and Laura. She is the third youngest of the eleven children.
