Spencer was born on December 2nd, 1885 in Cowden, Kent, England. Spencer's father was Charles Longley and his mother was Mary Patmore. His paternal grandparents were John Longley and Esther Kenward. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, Percy, Verney, Albert and Mary. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 83 in 1968 in Hastings, Sussex, England.
